General Dynamics Completes Acquisition of Itronix Corporation

General Dynamics Completes Acquisition of Itronix Corporation

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) today completed its acquisition of Itronix Corporation, a Spokane, Washington-based provider of wireless, rugged mobile computing solutions. Plans to acquire the company were announced on August 3; terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition is accretive to General Dynamics.

Itronix, which has approximately 450 employees, provides a broad range of advanced wireless, rugged field computing systems, including handhelds, laptops and tablet PCs, as well as wireless integration and support services for the military, public safety and select commercial markets, including telecommunication; commercial field services; utilities; transportation; and insurance sectors. Itronix now becomes part of General Dynamics C4 Systems.

Itronix products and services complement General Dynamics' existing command, control and communications capabilities. Along with capabilities acquired through the Aug. 16 purchase of Tadpole Computer, Inc. (Cupertino, Calif.), this enhanced expertise in rugged wireless computing enables General Dynamics to expand its offerings of trusted end-to-end, highly available network services, especially to defense customers. These mobile networks deliver actionable intelligence via advanced command-and-control applications to soldiers at the outer fringes of tactical networks, where bandwidth and other resources are limited.

Mark Fried, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems, said, "More than ever, our core U.S. defense and homeland security customers are relying on rugged mobile computing solutions to meet their mission requirements. The acquisitions of Itronix and Tadpole Computer enable General Dynamics C4 Systems to deliver expanded capabilities that meet our customers' requirements, from the core to the very farthest edges of the network."

With more than 10,000 employees worldwide, General Dynamics C4 Systems specializes in command and control, communications networking, space systems, computing and information assurance for defense, government and select commercial customers in the United States and abroad.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 70,800 people worldwide and had 2004 revenues of $19.2 billion. The company is a market leader in mission-critical information systems and technologies; land and expeditionary combat systems; armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and business aviation. HCA Completes Airlift Evacuation at Tulane University Hospital and Clinic; Assists Nearby Hospitals

HCA Completes Airlift Evacuation at Tulane University Hospital and Clinic; Assists Nearby Hospitals

Privately-contracted helicopters move patients and staff at hospitals crippled by Hurricane Katrina

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- HCA (NYSE:HCA) Twenty helicopters hired by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) have completed the evacuation of patients and staff from Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, which began four days ago following Hurricane Katrina. The evacuation included close to 200 patients and over 1,200 employees and staff. HCA leadership, coordinating with Gov. Blanco's office, has offered the 20 helicopters at its expense to assist with the evacuation of nearby Charity Hospital's two facilities, as well as University Medical Center, which are not affiliated with HCA. As many as 50 Charity Hospital patients, some severely ill and on ventilators, have already been evacuated by HCA.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050825/CLTH069LOGO)

The evacuation process has consisted of a constant airlift using privately-contracted Blackhawk helicopters, Medi-vacs, passenger helicopters, and, with cooperation from government authorities, Chinook military aircraft. With each arrival, the helicopters dropped 750 pounds of food, water and medical supplies, filling the choppers with people for their return runs to the New Orleans airport, where buses wait ready to transport healthy individuals to shelter locations in Lafayette. Now the buses are taking people to HCA's Lakeview Hospital in Covington. Some patients have been transferred to hospitals in the area, and, in an effort to alleviate the local burden, others were transported to HCA facilities in Texas and Florida.

HCA has dozens of staff on the ground in New Orleans coordinating evacuation and relief efforts. Many have been in place since Katrina hit. Others, flown in on private aircraft from other HCA hospital locations, have arrived to support nursing and supply efforts in the area. Another 170 nurses are on stand-by through "All About Staffing", HCA's internally-run temporary nurse staffing organization. As the Tulane operation begins to wind down, the 20 helicopters the company had hired to assist in evacuating patients and staff are being maintained at HCA's expense to assist with the evacuations from Charity's two hospitals. Blackhawk helicopters will be used by HCA to provide food, water, and medical supplies for Charity Hospital's patients and staff. Some 150 employees from Chalmette were taken to an HCA-managed makeshift shelter in Lafayette.

"This situation demands we all do everything we can to help one another. We have use of these services, so it only makes sense that we keep these helicopters under contract in the air and provide help to other hospitals as best we can," said Jack O. Bovender, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of HCA.

Earlier this week, HCA announced $2 million in cash donations, half of which would go to the American Red Cross for relief efforts, the other half to HCA's Hope Fund, to assist HCA personnel who have lost homes and belongings in the disaster. The company has pledged to maintain all 3,800 employees in the area on full salary indefinitely, and to arrange for them to find employment with other HCA facilities. Three other HCA hospitals in the region have been affected by the storm: all patients and staff from Lakeside Hospital in Metairie, Louisiana were evacuated earlier in the week; operations remain intact at both Garden Park Medical Center, in Gulfport, Mississippi and Lakeview Regional Medical Center, where evacuated patients and employees from Tulane are now being sent.

HCA is the nation's leading provider of healthcare services, composed of locally managed facilities that include approximately 190 hospitals and 90 outpatient surgery centers in 23 states, England and Switzerland. At its founding in 1968, Nashville-based HCA was one of the nation's first hospital companies.

Military Pilot Training Enters a New Era With Rollout of the First Production T-50 Advanced Jet Trainer Aircraft

Military Pilot Training Enters a New Era With Rollout of the First Production T-50 Advanced Jet Trainer Aircraft

FORT WORTH, Texas, SACHON, South Korea, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Training systems for military aircraft pilots entered a new era on August 30, 2005, when Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) rolled out the first production version of the T-50 Golden Eagle advanced jet trainer.

The aircraft was developed and is being marketed worldwide with the assistance of Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT).

Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun, was the principal speaker at the ceremony. "The roll out of the T-50 means the achievement of the long desire of the Korean government to boost the high tech aerospace industries in Korea and to strengthen the basis of self national defense through development of the indigenous supersonic aircraft. The T-50 aircraft will be a cornerstone of the superiority of the ROKAF's air defense power and allow our Air Force the ability to change or improve the configuration of the aircraft, which will ultimately allow us to develop indigenous fighters in the near future," said President Roh, during his speech at the ceremony.

The T-50 provides the opportunity to enhance pilot training at lower overall costs due to reduced flying time in operational fighter qualifications. Other benefits include a robust integrated logistics support system with a worldwide support network.

Chung Hae-Ju, president of KAI, said, "The remarkable success of the development and the smooth production of the T-50 advanced jet trainer within ten years came as a result of the strong will and vision of all members of the T-50 team, the endless support from the related government agencies and the devoted efforts of the KAI employees, Lockheed Martin and all the participating industries."

KAI is the prime contractor for the T-50, and Lockheed Martin is the principal subcontractor assisting with development of the new high-performance trainer. The two companies are joint participants in international marketing of the T-50.

The supersonic T-50 will have the maneuverability, endurance and systems to prepare pilots to fly current advanced fighters such as the Lockheed Martin advanced F-16 and fifth generation fighters such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. These same characteristics give it an excellent capability as a lead in fighter and light combat aircraft in many air forces. The lead-in fighter trainer version of the Golden Eagle is designated as the A-50. Its main differences are the addition of an armament system and a fire control radar.

South Korea is currently ordering 50 T-50 and 44 A-50 aircraft, while an additional 200 A-50s could be ordered in the 2007 to 2012 timeframe to replace the country's aging F-5 fighters. KAI and Lockheed Martin see the potential for the sale of another 600 aircraft to other international customers.

Lockheed Martin Makes $1 Million Contribution to Hurricane Katrina Employee Assistance Fund

BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) announced it has established the Lockheed Martin Hurricane Katrina Employee Assistance Fund and has made an initial $1 million contribution. The contribution is based on the current needs assessment of employees who work at company operations along the Gulf Coast. The Corporation will continue to evaluate and identify ways in which it can help its employees and their communities. This contribution is in addition to one Lockheed Martin made earlier in the week to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

"The people of Lockheed Martin have always responded to tragedy as a family -- with compassion, generosity and resilience," according to Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO, Robert J. Stevens. "This situation is no different. Together, we will help restore the lives and communities so devastated by this unprecedented event," Stevens added.

To help ease the stress and uncertainty during these difficult times, Lockheed Martin is taking steps to ensure that employees continue to receive their basic pay and benefits. Additionally, the Corporation will ensure that reservists and guardsmen who are called to active duty in support of the recovery effort receive their full pay and benefits.

One of the first actions the Corporation undertook in the aftermath of the storm was to establish a hotline for employees to call for assistance, staffed by employee volunteers. The response has been so overwhelming that the number of employee volunteers has been doubled, and the hours have been extended from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday. Additionally, the hotline will remain open through the Labor Day holiday weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and future weekends while the need continues. Employees are encouraged to call the hotline at 800-563-8442 to advise of their status.

Employees are encouraged to check http://www.lockheedmartin.com/ for the latest updates on facilities, how to contribute to the relief effort and other hurricane related news. They may also use this site to email their status, ask questions, or offer housing assistance to fellow employees.

US Army Selects Metal Storm Crowd Control SBIR for Contract Negotiation

US Army Selects Metal Storm Crowd Control SBIR for Contract Negotiation

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Metal Storm Limited (Nasdaq: MTSX; ASX trading code: MST) announced today that the US Army's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) has selected the Company's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II proposal titled 'Metal Storm Crowd Control System' for a contract award, subject to successful completion of contract negotiations. The proposed funding amount to complete this project is US$730,000 (approximately AU$950,000).

The US Army Research Office has listed Metal Storm on its web site (www.aro.army.mil/arowash/rt/awards/sbir_recent_05ph2_company.htm) as a company selected for award of a Phase II SBIR in 2005. Awards are made subject to successful completion of contract negotiations with selected companies and the availability of funds. Based on current information Metal Storm expects this negotiation process to be completed by the end of September 2005.

This SBIR Phase II project will provide for the design, prototyping and feasibility demonstration of Metal Storm less than lethal munitions that will provide a scalable effect for crowd control. These munitions will be compatible with the Metal Storm launcher technology and incorporated into the munitions will be smart-round capability, providing an improved level of safety and flexibility in the less than lethal spectrum of operations. The project effort, once started, is expected to occur over a 2 year period.

David Smith, Metal Storm's Chief Executive Officer said, "This proposal selection is significant for two reasons. Firstly, it's the first Phase II SBIR selection that the company has achieved and we aim to take it through to a successful conclusion as a Phase III project, which is the commercialization phase. Secondly, it will facilitate the development of a family of less-than-lethal munitions to be added to the Metal Storm line of High Explosive (HE) munitions currently under development, and will provide the US Army with a range of munitions to use with Metal Storm 40mm weapon systems."

"We are extremely pleased to have our technology proposal selected by the US Army in support of their efforts to provide a broad warfighting versatility. I believe this has the potential to add enormous capability to operations requiring crowd control and for the urban warfare environment.

"As advised to the market in March, Metal Storm has initiated discussions with several munitions contractors regarding continued munitions development and the establishment of production capabilities. This will ensure we can provide a family of munitions, including less than lethal, to go with our weapons systems. We will continue to keep the market informed of developments in this area," said Mr. Smith.

For further information on the SBIR Program and Process please see the footnote below.

About Less than Lethal Weapons

(Source: Department of Defense Directive. 1996, 9 July - Policy for Non-Lethal Weapons. No. 3000.3)

The US Department of Defense defines these weapons as follows:

Weapons that are explicitly designed and primarily employed so as to incapacitate personnel or material, while minimizing fatalities, permanent injury to personnel, and undesired damage to property and the environment. Unlike conventional lethal weapons that destroy their targets principally through blast, penetration and fragmentation, non-lethal weapons employ means other than gross physical destruction to prevent the target from functioning. Non-lethal weapons are intended to have one, or both, of the following characteristics: a. they have relatively reversible effects on personnel or material, b. they affect objects differently within their area of influence.

About the US Army SBIR Program
(source: US Army Research Office website -- all amounts expressed in US$)

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program is a Congressionally-mandated program which was established in 1982 (with subsequent reauthorizations in 1986, 1992, and 2000 until 2008) to increase the participation of small businesses in federal research and development (R&D).

The goal of the dual-use SBIR Program is to tap into the innovativeness and creativity of the small business community to help meet government R&D objectives. At the same time, these small companies develop technologies, products, and services which they can then commercialize through sales in the private sector or back to the government.

Three-Phase Process

The SBIR Program conducts a project, if successful, through three phases. Proposals submitted in response to the solicitation topics are competitively selected for Phase I awards. Note that Phase I is the entry point to the program; it cannot be bypassed. Phase I proposals must respond to a specific topic in the solicitation; the SBIR Program does not accept unsolicited proposals.

In Phase I, the company must prove the feasibility of its concept within a six-month, Phase I - $70,000 effort. The Phase I contract also includes an option, for up to $50,000, which may be exercised by the Army to fund interim Phase II activities if the project is selected to receive a Phase II award. The option is intended to fund initial Phase II activities for up to four months while the Phase II contract is being negotiated, providing critical continuity to the company's overall SBIR effort.

Successful Phase I companies are invited to compete for Phase II funding by submitting Phase II proposals near the end of their Phase I efforts. Phase II is a substantial R&D effort, up to $730,000 over two years, and is intended to result in a dual-use prototype product or service meeting the requirements of the original solicitation topic and which can be made commercially viable.

Phase III is the goal of every SBIR effort, and represents the commercialization phase of the program. In Phase III, the successful company markets the products or services developed in Phase II, either to the government or in the commercial sector. No SBIR funds can be used in Phase III. The intention of SBIR is that each company receiving an investment of SBIR funds during Phases I and II should now be prepared to compete in the commercial marketplace in Phase III.

The evacuation of other patients, staff and family members continued Friday as the Department responds to Hurricane Katrina.

"The safety of our patients is paramount for all VA employees," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "The professionalism and bravery of VA employees is allowing us to evacuate our patients from two facilities, without mishap, during an unprecedented catastrophe."

Information about patients evacuated from the VA medical centers in New Orleans and Gulfport can be obtained toll-free at 1-800-507-4571.

Inpatients formerly at the Gulfport, Miss., VA Medical Center were transferred before the hurricane struck to other VA medical centers.

Ten inpatients on ventilators at the New Orleans VAMC were evacuated to the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. before being transported to other medical centers in the region. Ninety-eight additional patients were successfully evacuated Thursday using a VA truck convoy and flown via Air National Guard C-130s to Houston, Jackson, Miss., and Alexandria, La.

Evacuation of the remaining 94 patients in VA's New Orleans facility, along with 367 staff and family members, continued into the night Thursday and on Friday, and will continue until all have been safely relocated.

The VA medical centers in New Orleans and Gulfport both sustained major storm damage. The Gulfport facility has been closed and the one in New Orleans will be closed after the last patients have been transferred.

"I salute our VA employees in all our Gulf Coast facilities for their courage, stamina and compassion," Nicholson said. "There is still much to be done, and we're diligently going about the task at hand."

VA officials are establishing procedures for family members to locate inpatients evacuated from the affected facilities. Officials are also finalizing procedures for veterans from the hurricane area to receive benefits checks and prescription drugs, and to ensure that VA employees continue to be paid.

"VA health care professionals from across the country are volunteering to care for our evacuees," Nicholson said. "We are moving quickly to ensure our veterans can continue to receive their regular health care and other benefits."

The volunteer corps of VA has assisted veterans for nearly 60 years, and Nicholson said people wishing to help should contact their nearest VA facility and ask for the Voluntary Service Office.

Amicus to Ballot all Manual Workers at Rolls-Royce

Amicus to Ballot all Manual Workers at Rolls-Royce

LONDON, September 2/PRNewswire/ -- Amicus trade union is preparing to ballot nearly 800 members at the
Rolls-Royce plant in Bristol as the dispute in support of a sacked Amicus
convenor, Jerry Hicks, escalates

Amicus is preparing to ballot approximately 800 manual workers at
Rolls-Royce in Bristol for strike action to demand Jerry's reinstatement.
This is in addition to 96 engineers in the site's test department where Jerry
worked who began a continuous strike on Tuesday, 23rd August, in support of
the Amicus convenor sacked by the company in July.

The announcement comes on the day of a rally in Bristol in support of
Jerry Hicks. Hundreds of union members and Rolls-Royce workers from all over
the country are expected to attend the rally at 1pm today. Other rallies
have already taken place at Bristol and in Derby.

The union say the ballot will be concluded in September and, if voted
for, strike action will begin in October. Amicus have also warned that they
may also ballot more than 200 Rolls-Royce administrative staff at Bristol.

Amicus' National Officer, Ian Waddell, said:

"Amicus and our members are determined to do everything we can to achieve
Jerry Hick's reinstatement.

"It's unbelievable that the company seem to be willing to let this
dispute grow rather than just do the right thing and give Jerry his job back.

"Rolls-Royce released a statement earlier this week saying that workers
should be careful not to risk a successful business but it's Rolls-Royce that
are prepared to risk a damaging strike because of their failed handling of
industrial relations."

Machinists Vote to Strike Boeing

Machinists Vote to Strike Boeing

Statement of Tom Buffenbarger, International President, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), AFL-CIO following Vote to Strike by IAM Members at The Boeing Company

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- "Machinists Union members voted twice today. Once to reject a contract offer by the Boeing Company that took away far more than it gave, and a second time to strike. Both votes were overwhelming," said Tom Buffenbarger, president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

"The Machinists showed Boeing what they could do with their reverse Robin Hood approach -- stealing from workers to give to the wealthy. They ripped the proposed contract in half and tossed it away. And tonight, at 12:01 a.m., they will put down their tools and pick up their picket signs.

"Machinists' militancy rises in direct proportion to corporate greed and corruption. At Boeing, the only way to win a better life for our members is to strike. How long this strike lasts is anyone's guess. But unless and until the Boeing Company improves their last offer significantly, the Machinists will be pounding the pavement."
